Santorini – My favourite Greek island
How do I select a Greek island?
Greece’s 5 best Greek islands:
1. Santorini is only an hour from Santorini
My favourite island in Greece is Santorini. Sicani, if you can only visit one island, make it Santorini Enjoy great boat trips, wine tours, fantastic hotels, incredible restaurants and awesome things to do. Between Crete and Santorini is the best island in Greece in winter and shoulder season when it still has plenty to do.
In Santorini, Oia is located.
Located in Ammoudi Bay for fresh seafood and amazing sunset views.
Mykonos is the best nightlife and club in Greece. And has fantastic beaches and a surprisingly charming capital town, Mykonos Town.
Ornos is one of my favourite beaches in Greece.
Venice in Mykonos City. Mostly filled with small restaurants and trendy clubs.
The largest Greek island and rich with beaches, historic sights, hiking paths, and small cities. So big that you should only have a week before you can limit yourself to this island. If you have two weeks it is a great pairing with Santorini.
Chania is the most charming town in Crete and a great place to explore Western Crete.
Rethymnon has a cool old town and good beaches accessible from most hotels.
Naxos is the most family friendly island in Greece. The beach is huge and the main town is packed with wonderful Tavernas serving some of the best food on the Greek islands. The inland villages are a delight to explore.
The town beach in Naxos Town is shallow and very child-friendly. Even better beaches are a short walk down the coast.
Naxos Town has some of the best restaurants in Greece.
A wonderful mix of the fantastic beaches and villages of Naxos and the nightlife and boutique vibe of Mykonos. This island is becoming a bit more popular each year, but is still quiet compared to Santorini and Mykonos.
Paros has two of the most picturesque cities in Greece, Naoussa (above) and Parikia (the ferry-port). Either city makes a great base for exploring the other (and the rest of the island).
A highlight of Paros is taking a day trip to Antiparos – where the beaches are quiet and secluded and some of the best in Greece.
Greek Islands – Where To Go?
The most romantic greek island and best for a honeymoon is Santorini (Mykonos is great if you want more nightlife. This is King Suite (with Whirlpool) at Keti Hotel in Fira – one of Santorini’s most private and romantic suites.
Mykonos has the best nightlife and nightlife scene of any greek island. It usually begins with dinner and drinks by the pool and then hits the clubs in Mykonos town.
Beach parties in Mykonos occur on Paradise and Super Paradise beaches and will run from mid-June to mid-September. Other beaches, such as Platys Gialos above, Paraga or Psarrou, have beach clubs that stomp the music and dance up until around 10 pm. The party then moves to Mykonos Town or Paradise Beach.
Santorini and Milos are two of the most beautiful islands in Greece and have a similar enchantment of the other worldly. The fishing village of Firopotamos is located on Milos.
The Greek islands are filled with amazing beaches. Some of the best are found in Naxos, Crete and Ios. This is Mylopotas beach on Ios – one of my favorite beaches in Greece.
Island-hopping by ferry is one of the highlights of Greek islands. Sit on the deck of a ferry and watch the islands pass by until you arrive at your destination.
Folegandros is the best greek island for hiking – great trails round this beautiful island.
All the greek islands have great food and restaurants. The best Greek islands for foodie are Santorini, Crete, Naxos and Paros. This is a Gyros platter from a restaurant in Crete.
Naxos is a lovely family destination. Great beaches, relaxed vibes, cheap hotels (and luxurious ones too), and there’s even a water park!
Paros is also a great island for families and it has a bit more shopping and activities for teens – and nightlife for older family members.
Chania, Crete One of Greece’s most beautiful towns.

In July and August Greece’s Best Island to Visit
Visiting the Best Greek Islands in December, January and February
Most islands are very quiet in the winters. Crete and Santorini are the best islands as they still have plenty of things to do in winter and there are many (open) places to stay and eat.
Greek island group
It’s best to visit Greece within the same group. For example, I would not recommend going to Corfu and Santorini on the same trip, since they’re located on opposite sides of the country. Instead, visit islands in the same island group – the cyanides, sporades, dodecanese, ionian, saronic and the Northeastern Aegean. They are both close to one another. Two, they have frequently – connected – ferry connections with each other. For first-time visitors to Greece the Cyclades make the most natural and convenient introduction.
