Juan Espino Locks an Thruist holder ; and Supposed Jeff Hughes at UFC 253
There were questions as to how Juan Espino would look in his first UFC fight since he won The Ultimate Fighter two years ago but he looked rather impressive on the preliminary card of UFC 253 in his win over Jeff Hughes.
Espino Hughes knocked it down five times in the first round before logging a rare submission before winning the first-round run.
While Bruce Buffer presented the submission as an arm triangle, Paul Felder declared on commentary that it was less that and more a scarf stand submission.
This would give Espino the second scare holding submission in UFC history.
Aleksei Oleinik had the first in his triumph last year against Anthony Hamilton.
Espino had not fought until tonight since Justin Frazier had submitted with an armlock to win the 28th season of The Ultimate Fighter.
After the fight, Espino in his post-fight interview expressed his appreciation of finally winning the octogon title fight – even asking if there were any other heavyweights in the back that he could fight immediately.
