The newly renovated Palais Galliera, The City of Paris Fashion Museum, opens its exhibit on Thursday with the brand ‘Gabrielle Chanel: Manifeste de Mode’, which spans the brand from its beginnings in the 1910s to Gabrielle Chanel’s final collection in 1971. The exhibit brings together 350 pieces from the museum’s own collection, the Patrimoine de Chanel, international museums and private collections. It marks not only the beginning of one of the world’s largest brands, but also the incarnation of a new style code.

This exhibition, which is divided into two parts, both chronologically and thematically, takes advantage of the newly opened floor exhibition rooms of the Palais. One room is dedicated to No. Deesiderating the product that carried the house through the war before Chanel relaunched in 1954. Decorated with screens and mirrors to invoke the spirit of her apartment in Rue Cambon, the exhibition also displays 10 portraits of Chanel revealing how much Gabrielle herself was an embodiment of the house. Galeries underground examine the Codes of the house of Chanel: the Tweed suit, two tone pumps, the 2.55 bag, costume jewelry.

This is the first Paris retrospective dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel and her presence is felt throughout the exhibition. The exhibit is open until February 14th, 2021.
